Spielberg/Abrams film Super 8 begins shooting on location in West Virginia

A new sci-fi film called Super 8 begins shooting this week on location in Weirton, West Virginia, under the codename Wickham. The film is written and directed by JJ Abrams, with Steven Spielberg onboard as a Producer.

Pam Haynes, Director of the West Virginia Film Office, said: “The Film Office staff fought hard to bring this production into the state and we could not have done it without the incredible support we have received from numerous city, county and state officials, as well as business leaders throughout the Northern Panhandle.”

The film tells the story of a group of mid-Western youngsters in 1979 who catch something mysterious on their amateur camera after a train carrying an unknown cargo from UFO hotspot Area 51 derails. Studio filming is expected to take place in Los Angeles once the West Virginia shoot is complete.
