Netflix’s Stranger Things doubled the state of Georgia for Indiana

Netflix’s hit sci-fi series, Stranger Things was shot almost entirely on location within the state of Georgia, with portions also filmed at Screen Gems Studios in Atlanta. The state was used as a cheat for Indiana, which is currently without a film incentive programme. The city of Jackson features prominently on the show but scenes at the local school and laboratory were filmed elsewhere at Patrick Henry High School and Emory University’s Briarcliff campus respectively.

The Butts County Courthouse and the surrounding square can be seen a number of times throughout the series. To keep in line with the show’s 1983 period setting, some of the local storefronts were changed.

Bellwood Quarry, which has previously featured in AMC’s The Walking Dead and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, also appears.

Inspired by the earlier works of Steven Spielberg and Stephen King, Stranger Things depicts the mysterious disappearance of a 12 year old boy and the ensuing effort to ensure his safe return, leading his rescuers on to uncovering a sinister truth.

Quietly released on to Netflix’s steaming service in July 2016, Stranger Things has since become one of the company’s most popular and critically acclaimed series, after having been watched by 8.2 million viewers in its first 16 days of availability.

The show was renewed for a second series yesterday, with Netflix providing a teaser trailer to accompany the announcement.

Productions filming in Georgia can access a lucrative 20% tax credit incentive and an uplift of 10% if the state is sufficiently credited as a filming location. Netflix’s upcoming series Ozark began filming by Lake Allatoona last month while HBO’s adaptation of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks took over Buckhead Church in Atlanta last week.
