Golden Globes 2018: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri comes out on top

Martin McDonagh’s North Carolina-shot drama has emerged victorious at this year’s Golden Globes, scoring four awards including Best Drama and Best Screenplay. Produced by Blueprint Pictures and distributed by 20th Century Fox, the film’s principal photography lasted for 33 days, visiting locations such as Sylva, Black Mountain and Asheville.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Golden Globe, Awards, 2017, Film, Filming, Locations, News, North Carolina, Article, Editorial, Writing, Publishing, Entertainment, Production, Industry, The Location GuideDuring the pre-production stage, Location Manager Robert Foulkes explained: “North Carolina had recently brought back their tax incentives, but that gave the incentive to the production company to want to come here… we weren’t necessarily sold on anything we had seen in any other states, and we jumped on the chance.”

Three Billboards’ success was closely followed by Greta Gerwig’s coming-of-age comedy, Lady Bird. During production, Gerwig made extensive use of California’s Sacramento as a filming location. Due to budget restraints however, most of the film’s interior scenes were shot in Los Angeles.

In TV, the accolades for Best Drama and Best Comedy went to The Handmaid’s Tale and The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel respectively. The Handmaid’s Tale previously made headlines for being the first online series to receive an Emmy award in the same category.

Projects filming in North Carolina can receive a 25% rebate when a specified minimum spend is met. Similarly, productions can receive tax credits of up to 25% upon meeting various criteria when filming in California.
