Oscars 2018: Ontario-shot, The Shape of Water, takes home Best Picture

After scoring 13 nominations, Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water took home four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Production Design. Shot in Ontario over a two and a half month period, the production made extensive use of the province’s period architecture to recreate 1960s Baltimore.

Miles Dale, Producer of The Shape of Water, he explained: “Massey Hall (exterior) and Elgin Theatre (interior) were used for their magnificent design and intricate detail. So was Lakeview Lunch as a period appropriate diner, the exterior of the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus for its brutalist architecture, Hamilton Sand Piles for its visual uniqueness and Hamilton City Hall for its specific period correctness to the time frame of the film. Keating Channel was also used for its water access and view of the Gardiner Expressway.”

A 35% tax credit can be awarded to domestic productions that film within the province, increasing to 40% in the event of first-time producers. Foreign productions receive a smaller rate of 21.5% when shooting locally.

Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell were recognised for their roles in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, winning Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor respectively. Despite the film’s titular location, Three Billboards was actually shot in North Carolina.

In a previous interview with TLG, North Carolina Film Commissioner Guy Gaster detailed: “the two main locations were Main Street in Sylva and an isolated road outside of Black Mountain (both located in Western North Carolina) near the city of Asheville. Director Martin McDonagh envisioned a small town that could represent anywhere in the middle of the United States.”

North Carolina provides a 25% tax rebate on filming when a minimum spend is met. The per-project cap varies between production types but the incentive will have an annual fund of USD31 million for the 2018-19 period.
