World War Z and Cloud Atlas location filming deliver millions for Glasgow in 2011

Major shoots for Brad Pitt’s World War Z and Cloud Atlas helped feed more than GBP20 million into Glasgow’s economy throughout 2011, according to figures from the city’s film office. World War Z delivered nearly GBP3.5 million when it turned the city centre into Philadelphia for nearly 20 days.

The production racked up local spending on some 8,500 hotel nights for around 1,200 cast and crew. A series of much smaller one- and two-day shoots accounted for direct spending of more than GBP2 million.

Alongside the great deal of excitement and enjoyment that films such as World War Z and Cloud Atlas brought was a tremendous economic boost for the city.

Cloud Atlas used Germany as its production base and took advantage of some of Glasgow’s steep hills to double the city for San Francisco. With the city’s diverse architecture and specific geography it’s an easy option for productions based in the UK and on mainland Europe.
