China tours Dubai studio facilities ahead of possible location filming deal

A Chinese delegation has toured studio facilities in Dubai as they consider a formal production tie with the Middle Eastern city. Representatives from the China State Administration of Radio, Film & Television (SARFT) toured Dubai Media City and Dubai Studio City.

Jamal Al Sharif is Managing Director of both facilities: “Dubai Media City and Dubai Studio City can offer a blueprint of how to develop an industry sector from scratch over the long-term."

“Our own infrastructure," he adds, "in addition to the support services offered for international filmmakers and media companies, means that we can put forward a compelling case for more production to take place in Dubai.”

Zhanf Hongsen is with SARFT: “Dubai's Media City and Studio City have proven to be very impressive ... China and Dubai have established strong trading relations and we hope to grow this in the film production industry.”

Production industries around the world are looking to get a foothold in the Chinese market. Marvel recently formed a co-production agreement with Beijing-based DMG Entertainment for Iron Man 3 and James Cameron has launched a 3D venture in the country.

Dubai does not yet offer any formal location filming incentives, but it recently launched the Dubai Film and TV Commission.
