Producer advocates Glasgow for permanent Scottish film studio development

Producer Gillian Berrie has advocated Glasgow as the best location for a permanent studio in Scotland. The concern is that plans to film new TV series Outlander in temporary, retrofitted warehouses outside the city are diverting attention from the need for permanent facilities.

Berrie is a co-founder of Film City Glasgow, which has plans to develop a permanent 100,000-square-foot studio in the centre of the city, the Herald Scotland reports. The studio is being viewed as a long-term investment for Scotland and would be more accessible than the short-term facility being used in Cumbernauld for Outlander.

“I don't think Cumbernauld will affect us,” Berrie told the outlet: “It really is a converted warehouse for one production and they will just use one space for that production. When they have downtime they will lock the door and leave the sets until they start again."

The Scottish Government set up a Film Studio Delivery Group in early 2013 to assess the best location for a permanent studio. A decision is yet to be made, but Film City Glasgow wants to ensure that Scotland does not settle for a retrofitted, short-term solution.
