Chinese-language TV drama to film on location in Seattle in Washington State

A new Chinese-language TV drama will film on location in Seattle in Washington State. Washington Filmworks is co-producing with China’s DMG Entertainment and the so-far untitled show will chart the lives of Chinese nationals dealing with life in modern America.

Washington Filmworks (WFW) agreed a memorandum of understanding with DMG Entertainment during a recent trade mission to China that was led by Washington’s Governor Jay Inslee and which involved 90 different Washington companies.

Beijing-based DMG Entertainment was a co-producer on Rian Johnson’s time-travel drama Looper (above) that filmed partly in Shanghai, as well as Marvel’s Iron Man 3, which filmed scenes in Beijing.

The Seattle area boasts a highly diverse cultural make-up and that includes a lot of Chinese and Asian communities, which makes it a perfect place to set the show.

“The support from Washington Filmworks and Governor Inslee’s office has been great and is a clear indication of the future of this collaboration,” said Dan Mintz, CEO and co-founder of DMG Entertainment.

“We are really looking forward to working with WFW and the many talented TV production crews in Washington for the upcoming show and beyond. The Seattle area boasts a highly diverse cultural make-up and that includes a lot of Chinese and Asian communities, which makes it a perfect place to set the show.”

The new show has the potential to boost film tourism in Seattle and Washington State as it will screen on China’s biggest network, the state-run CCTV.

American studios are looking for ways to tap into the lucrative Chinese market and its rich box-office potential. Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction (left) has become the latest big-budget production to film scenes in Hong Kong and elsewhere in the country, which should ease access to China’s huge Transformers fan base when the film is released in 2014.
