Joshua Tree films carousel spot on location in Romania for Kirloskar generators

Mumbai-based Joshua Tree filmed on location in a Romanian funfair to promote the longevity of generators made by Indian conglomerate Kirloskar. The spot shows a small girl riding a brightly-lit carousel in the dead of night and morphing into a young woman with the passage of time.

Prague, Istanbul and Ukraine were considered as filming locations before the production team opted for Romanian capital Bucharest, partly to reduce costs.

“Our client wanted to shoot in Europe as the script demanded a very mystical and European feel, but the budgets were very tight. All credit to Bucharest servicing company Family Film for pulling off an absolutely global standard film in the limited resources available to us and them,” said executive producer and founder of Joshua Tree, Joshua Upputuru.

Terra Park in Bucharest was chosen as the final filming location, but the production team spent two days heavily modifying their carousel to achieve the image they wanted.

“The biggest challenge was really shooting with kids in very cold weather,” added Joshua Tree producer Priyanka Kher: “The temperature was low and the night shoot made it worse. Also, when it came to casting, finding four girls who looked like one person growing up was a major challenge.”

“Bucharest as a filming location was not something that we had considered in the past, but this opportunity of shooting there and having a production house like Family Film work with us was a highly energising experience,” Upputuru commented.

“We felt relaxed and absolutely at home. We would definitely recommend Romania as a high potential location for shoots in Europe, especially for smaller budgets.”
