Mystery drama series The Leftovers films on location in New York

New drama The Leftovers filmed on location in Mount Vernon, in northern New York City. The series follows the lives of a disparate group of individuals in the fictional town of Mapleton in the aftermath of a mysterious event that sees two percent of the world’s population vanish without trace.

Production was based at Mount Vernon’s Haven Studios, which offers around 42,000 square feet of production space in Westchester County just 20 minutes from Manhattan, reports the Journal News.

“I was drawn to Westchester County because it had a lot of places with the look we were going for in our fictional town of Mapleton, including secluded rural sites and suburban towns,” Location Manager Demian Resnick told the outlet: “Plus, the resources here are terrific – the people here are very welcoming to our industry.”

Added Dwayne Brown, President of the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce, to the outlet: “Anytime you can watch TV and see where you're from, there's pride in that. With HBO here, it's a big thing for Mount Vernon. A very big thing.”

Westchester is a popular filming location for both TV and film productions, offering suburban visuals within easy reach of Manhattan and New York’s studio facilities.

This year for the first time, New York has surpassed Los Angeles for TV pilot production, hosting 24 dramas compared to 19 in California. New York’s generous filming incentive programme is a major factor in the turnaround and the city in fact hosted as many TV pilots in the first five months of this year as it did in the whole of 2013.
