BBC starts filming new series of Doctor Who on location in Cardiff

Filming has started in Cardiff on the new series of Doctor Who. Peter Capaldi returns as the Doctor, with Jenna Coleman as his companion Clara Oswald. The new series will be screened in the autumn.

“An amazing guest cast for a brilliantly creepy two-parter by Toby Whithouse,” said Steven Moffat, the show’s lead writer and executive producer, referring to the episodes currently being filmed.

“Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman are back in Cardiff, back in the box, and back in action - for one of our scariest adventures yet!”

Capaldi added: “The adventures begin again for myself and Jenna and I’m delighted to be back filming my second series of Doctor Who.”

Doctor Who has become a major international hit for the BBC and has also filmed on location in the US, Eastern Europe, the Almerian Desert, the Middle East and the Canary Islands in recent years. Part of the new series will reportedly return to Spain.

The BBC has a strong presence in Wales and bases the family adventure series Atlantis in an adapted studio space in Chepstow.

Wales’ international profile continues to rise. Supernatural fantasy Da Vinci’s Demons has been based in the Swansea region for three seasons, doubling the area for Renaissance Italy. More recently Disney’s musical fantasy series Galavant filmed extensively in the south of the country.

Galavant was based at The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol, which has also recently hosted the BBC’s much-anticipated period drama Wolf Hall. The miniseries is set at the court of King Henry VIII and stars Damian Lewis and Mark Rylance.
