The 2023 Academy Awards closed out the awards season with a night of mutual respects shared between Hollywood’s best and brightest casts and crews present throughout the night. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the evening was interjected by performances from Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Sofia Carson and Diane Warren. With acclaimed projects taking home the well deserved prize, theatrical performances, and a star studded lineup, the Oscars kept it all about the art.

Film AlUla has announced the launch of their new platform, AlUla creates, which aims to nurture and empower the future generations in film, the arts and fashion. As part of Film AlUla’s wider plans to create a film-friendly ecosystem, it is also part of a year round programme that will see upcoming female filmmakers and creatives collaborating with leading industry professionals. They will also have access to development funds to encourage them to set their stories in AlUla.

Chiliadou Beach located on the island of Evia, Greece has won the sixth edition of the EUFCN Location Award. Recently featured in Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness, the rocky beach landscapes offered a secluded island setting for the characters. Accepted by Maria Koufopoulou, director of the Hellenic Film Commission and Mark Holevas, president of the Greek Film Centre, at the European Film Market 2023 in Berlin, the award is given to the best European location in the film and TV industries.

Starting on 16 February, Berlinale 2023 started off with some unmissable moments. Commencing the events with a digital livestream of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, the festival so far has seen attendance from a slate of top notch talent, the premieres of thought provoking works, as well as political protests and signs of solidarity. Berlinale will reach its close on 26 February.

Today the BFI announced their focus shift of the National Lottery funding into bringing screen culture directly to classrooms, offering guidance for career building as well as delivering local grassroots activity in disadvantaged communities. This new programme will provide activities for 5-18 year olds over the course of three years. As part of the National Lottery’s 10 year strategy, activity is set to commence in April 2023.

The BFI announced today the awarding of GBP 15.2 million in National lottery funding to 11 UK based strategic partners, spread over three years. Getting ready to implement the BFI’s 10 year National Lottery Funding Scheme, this investment will aid the growth of cinema audiences, seek to engage more 16-25 year olds in film, and support talent development across the UK.

General sale for tickets to the honouring of writer, actor, producer, author and NYU Grad Film Tenured professor Spike Lee will go on sale today at 4pm GMT. Lee will be honoured with the BFI Fellowship, the highest honour to be bestowed by the BFI. The filmmaker’s work includes his Academy Award-winning BlacKkKlansman and classics such as She’s Gotta Have It, later adapted for the Netflix series of the same title, and Do The Right Thing. The ceremony will take place at the BFI Southbank on 13 February, hosted by BFI Chair Tim Richards and BFI Chief Executive Ben Roberts.

Belfast’s RENDR Festival to bring blockbuster lineup of film and tv talent

RENDR, the new creative industries festival set to take place next month in Belfast revealed its lineup of speakers on 25 January. Those in attendance include professionals whose credits span The Mandalorian, The Batman, Top Gun: Maverick, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and more. Taking place from 23-24 February, the event will be held at Portview Trade Centre in Belfast.
