Plano in Illinois to become Superman’s hometown of Smallville

The latest Superman film is the other comic-book production that Christopher Nolan is helping steer towards the big screen. While Chicago will become Metropolis, the rural town of Plano, also in Illinois, is set to become Clark Kent’s adopted childhood home of Smallville.

Bill Doyle, an executive with Warner Bros, said: “Plano proved to represent what the director and producers felt was the epitome of an all-American small town in scale, architecture and general ambience. It also had several logistical factors that pushed it to the top of our list of choices, including proximity to both Chicago and open farmland.”

Nearly 60 different locations throughout Illinois were scouted earlier this year, but the studio decided Plano was the best physical fit. According to Bob Hausler, Mayor of Plano, the town has registered a year-on-year sales tax increase of USD14,000, suggesting the scouting and initial set development process for the film is already benefitting Plano.
