Nelson Mandela TV miniseries to film on location in South Africa

A TV miniseries exploring the life of Nelson Mandela will be filmed in South Africa later this year. Dramatising 60 years of the former President’s life up to his release from prison in 1990, the series will be six hours long and will have a production budget of around USD20 million.

The project will be a three-way co-production, involving Blue Ice Film in Canada, Left Bank Pictures in the UK and Out of Africa Entertainment in South Africa. It’ll be entitled Madiba, which is Mandela’s Xhosa clan name.

We will start filming in August and plan to release by 2013. Right now we are just pretty much casting and putting the script together.

Specific filming locations haven’t yet been confirmed for the project, but shooting is currently scheduled to start in August, with broadcast dates likely to be sometime in 2013.
