Doctor Who films Western-themed episode on location in Almeria region of Spain

Sci-fi TV favourite Doctor Who is filming in the Almeria region of Spain, using one of the so-called 'Mini Hollywood' sets to double for the American West. It's an area that was famously used by Sergio Leone in the 60s to film his Spaghetti Western trilogy.

Filming itself kicked off on the 7th (of March) at the Oasys Parque Temático del Desierto de Tabernas in the Almeria region.

The BBC states: "Filming itself kicked off on the 7th (of March) at the Oasys Parque Temático del Desierto de Tabernas in the Almeria region. The resort is set in the only European desert and provides a number of themed areas such as an aquatic zone, a wildlife park, and of more interest to Doctor Who, of course, a Western theme town known as 'Mini Hollywood'."

Doctor Who travelled to the US for the first time in 2010 to film scenes in Utah, but apparently this time Spain has proven more budget-friendly as a US double. The show itself is based in Cardiff in Wales, but has filmed in the past in locations including Croatia and Dubai.
