Ridley Scott’s Prometheus finds alien landscapes on location in Iceland

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus has been winning plaudits throughout the industry for its stunning visuals. While much of the film was shot at Pinewood Studios, Iceland’s unique vistas were the basis for the eye-catching alien landscapes.

Truenorth serviced the Iceland leg of the shoot and filming took place near the Hekla volcano in the south of the country, as well as at the Dettifoss waterfall in the north. Few changes were made to these striking landscapes for the purposes of the shoot, although the risk of volcanic eruption was ever-present.

Leifur Dagfinnsson is a Founding Partner and Executive Producer at Truenorth: “A few days before principal photography in Iceland the Hekla volcano rumbled a bit. We alerted the producers and created an evacuation plan to have at hand in case of an eruption. But fortunately Hekla remained dormant and filming went smoothly.

Since our base camp was fairly close to the volcano we had to have a plan and were ready to leave if needed.

Iceland remains hugely popular among the major Hollywood studios because of its experienced crew base and spectacular, other-worldly locations. Tom Cruise’s new epic sci-fi project, tentatively titled Oblivion, is one of the latest shoots to visit the country.
