Argentinacine stages battle of the sexes near Buenos Aires for Quilmes beer

Argentinacine has staged a gender showdown for Quilmes beer in sand dunes near Buenos Aires. An army of women faces off against their boyfriends as their respective leaders vent their relationship frustrations in rallying cries. Quilmes beer restores balance on the final charge.

The production was filmed on sand dunes near the seaside city of Villa Gesell, down the Atlantic coast from Buenos Aires. Lacking buildings or trees, the location suited the director’s vision as a remote battlefield with just sand and sea.

Nano Tidone was an Executive Producer for Argentinacine: “We had two challenges. One was that the set was 300 miles away from our base [in Buenos Aires]. So we needed five trucks to take people to the set and back to our base. We had a logistic issue that took up shooting time but we handled it very well.

“The second challenge was the wind. It was really windy and we had some troubles with direct sound. The main actor had to shout so much that the second day he lost his voice. We had to work really hard on his voice on set and afterwards.”

Filming involved two 35mm film cameras, a Steadicam and a crane, while a helicopter was used for aerial shots. The dunes themselves were unchanged over the three-day shoot, but were manipulated in post-production to suit the cinematic look and to create the full armies in wide shots.

Although the armies were bulked up later, there were still 700 extras on location, many of whom had to be brought in from another nearby town because Villa Gesell couldn’t satisfy the casting demand.

Tidone concludes: “As Villa Gesell is a city without a big population, we brought extras form Mar del Plata that is a bigger city next to Villa Gesell. We picked them up at five in the morning and at seven they were ready to shoot at the set.”
