North Carolina eyes Marvel’s Captain America sequel with film incentive extension

North Carolina has extended its location filming incentive by a year to the end of 2014 as it eyes Marvel’s upcoming Captain America sequel. The state already has a relationship with the studio as Iron Man 3 is filming at the moment, using EUE/Screen Gem Studios as a base.

It’s been a strong year for North Carolina, with The Hunger Games being a huge hit and JJ Abrams picking the state for his new TV show Revolution, quite apart from Marvel’s presence. The state is understandably keen to continue its relationship with Marvel, despite lingering doubts among some state officials about what benefits the filming incentive guarantees.

The film office has been careful to make clear that extending the incentive programme isn’t a guarantee that Marvel will again pick North Carolina.

Guy Gaster is with the North Carolina Film Office and spoke to Star News about the incentive’s potential to secure the Captain America sequel: “It definitely doesn't hurt our chances to get a project with that magnitude, and it makes filming a movie here more attractive. It's another feather in the cap. But there is no time line on when a decision like that would be made.”

The film office has been careful to make clear that extending the incentive programme isn’t a guarantee that Marvel will again pick North Carolina. Having the 25% tax credit is certainly a huge help, however, while the state’s prior experiences with The Hunger Games and Iron Man 3 shows it can handle big-budget shoots.
