James Cameron 3D venture in China develops Hollywood’s Far-East relations

Filmmaker James Cameron is opening a joint venture in China to offer 3D filming technology. The new deal apparently doesn’t involve direct production at this stage, but it’s the latest development in Hollywood’s growing interest in the Chinese market.

The filmmaker formed the Cameron Pace Group over a decade ago to develop the groundbreaking 3D cameras that were eventually used to make Avatar. The company now rents the equipment to productions around the world and the cameras have been used on location for shoots like Sanctum in Australia.

Cameron spoke to the Reuters news agency: “We're not going to tell Chinese filmmakers how to make movies. We are going to help them make a transition to 3D production technology as cost-effectively as possible, and in a way that doesn't inhibit creativity.”

The news comes only weeks after Cameron announced his interest in sorting out a Chinese co-production, but it seems that making the equipment available in the region is now the priority.

Marvel recently announced that scenes for Iron Man 3 will be shot in China through a co-production deal with DMG Entertainment in Beijing, while Seven Stars Entertainment – also based in Beijing – is planning an expansive studio facility just outside the city aimed specifically at East-West co-productions.
