Park Pictures takes Range Rover on location to Milan and Lake Como

Park Pictures headed to Milan, Lake Como and the French Alps in a spot for the next-generation Range Rover. Beginning in Milan, a suave gentleman takes the vehicle out of the city for a spin through winding mountain roads and around Lake Como.

Filming in Milan involved freeing several streets of local residents’ vehicles. “We were working with a very big area,” said Line Producer Michele Anzalone of Some Of Us: “It was the biggest area I’ve closed down in my nearly 30-year industry career. The police and local authorities were very helpful. Milan is a very film-friendly city; more so than Rome these days.”

The agency’s brief for the main driving setting called for a European location at an altitude of around a thousand metres, but where snow wasn’t too dominant a feature. Careful consideration led Park Pictures to the mountains of the French Alps just north of Nice near the border with Italy.

“It was an area I knew already,” commented Executive Producer Stephen Brierley, “so I was aware there would be a manageable snowline, although of course you have no control over what the weather will actually be like on the day.”

In the end heavy snowfall resulted in one weather day on top of the six-day shoot. The schedule was divided between the opening shots of Milan and then filming around the privately-owned Villa Erba on Lake Como further north, and then west to the peaks near Nice. In the narrative of the spot, the driver heads across the Italian Alps to Lake Como.

Brierley adds: “We filmed the aerial footage with a Stab-C stabilised camera that our Czech Director of Photography and his team brought with them from Prague. Fittings are standardised across the industry so we just attached it to the helicopter in Italy.”
