Gorgeous creates desert gaming rush filming in Spain for EA Sports FIFA 14

London-based Gorgeous filmed in Spain for a dynamic new spot for EA Sports FIFA 14 videogame. We Are FIFA 14 features star footballers and ordinary fans enjoying the frenetic new game as their living room furniture rushes across a desert plain in hot pursuit of Lionel Messi.

Alongside a couple of days of studio filming in Barcelona, the production team headed to a desert plain at Teruel near Valencia in eastern Spain. A small local airstrip helped with some of the travel logistics. The shoot involved 250 cast and crew, and finding accommodation locally for everyone proved a challenge.

“It was the biggest, flattest area that we could find which would not be subject to a dust storm if the wind got up,” explains Dominic Bolus, an executive producer with servicing company Widescope Productions.

Most of the speeding furniture was filmed in-camera using a combination of special effects rigs and discreet motors, which were then enhanced in post-production to achieve the specific visual style they were looking for.

“Although it was summer, the desert is on a higher plateau and it was very cold at times,” adds Erik Verheijen, Head of Production for Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam: “We often wore blankets to stay warm. Wind was tricky when filming with helicopters and we had quite a bit of clouds and rain too.”

Teruel lies north of the Almeria and Tabernas regions of Spain that historically have been used extensively as Old West locations, and are still used for TV and commercial productions.
