Velocity Films shoots on location in Johannesburg for J&B Scotch Whisky

Velocity Films shot on location in Johannesburg for a new spot for J&B Scotch Whisky. Made Different tells the story of Sbusiso Leope and his rise through the ranks of the music industry in Johannesburg and wider South Africa as DJ Sbu.

The production team spent three days shooting in Johannesburg, with few changes made locally to the filming locations.

“To get the 27 scenarios into the three days was the biggest challenge as Johannesburg is spread out and doing multiple travels in a day was not an option,” explained Rochelle April, Television & Radio producer with JWT Cape Town: “We managed to find everything we needed in the Johannesburg Central Business District, which made scheduling that much easier.

“The local authorities in Johannesburg are always helpful. The trick is to get the permissions in early and anything is possible.”

South Africa has a thriving international production industry and Johannesburg native Neill Blomkamp recently returned to the city to film his new feature Chappie.

Cape Town Film Studios has helped boost South Africa’s international profile in recent years and has hosted features such as Dredd and Safe House, as well as upcoming pirate miniseries Black Sails, which doubles the country for the Caribbean. In addition, rescue drama SAF3 (pronounced ‘Safe’) is filming on location in Cape Town, doubling the city for Malibu in California.

South Africa increased its base filming incentive to 20% in mid-2012 and also now offers a 5% rebate on local post-production work as the country seeks to compete globally.
