Game of Thrones to film part of new season on location in Spain

Cable channel HBO will film part of the fifth season of Game of Thrones on location in the Seville region of southern Spain. The show has been based in Northern Ireland throughout its four-season run, with additional location filming focussing on Iceland and Croatia.

“This filming, set to take place later this year, is being done in full collaboration with the Andalucía Film Commission through their president, Don Carlos Rosado, the Sevilla Film Office and the mayor of Sevilla, Don Juan Ignacio Zoido, and the Osuna Film Office and the mayoress, Doña Rosario Andújar,” said HBO.

Spain is a hugely popular international filming location and is currently drafting a formal production incentive that would raise its profile further still.

Tax breaks are already available for shoots that are considered Spanish co-productions - by way of a European Economic Interest Grouping - and this aided the recent Spanish shoot for Ridley Scott’s upcoming biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings. Big-budget features otherwise tend to focus on the Canary Islands, which offer a Special Zone Low-Tax Regime for filmmakers.

Game of Thrones has been a huge boost for Northern Ireland’s production industry. Studio work is based in the Titanic Quarter of Belfast and location filming takes place across the region. An expansive film tourism campaign has been built up around the show.

The story encompasses wildly contrasting locations calling for wintry and Mediterranean environments. As a result, the show has been a repeat visitor to Iceland and Croatia in recent years, although filming has also taken place in Morocco and Malta.

The Spanish leg of the shoot will be serviced by Fresco Film Services.
