Daredevil and Jessica Jones have brought 3,000 jobs to New York

Statistics have been published showing that the Netflix exclusive shows, Daredevil and the soon to be released Jessica Jones have helped to create 3,000 jobs for New Yorkers. These shows are the result of a partnership between Marvel and Netflix, securing the production and release of four series and a mini-series based on Marvel properties.

The unbreakable link between content and technology, coupled with competitive tax incentive programs, is a driving force behind productions that contribute enormously to the local communities in which they film.

This partnership is the largest of its kind in the state history of New York. Alongside the increase in available jobs, contracts have been made with over 900 New York vendors, greatly improving the state’s economy.

Airing today on Netflix, Jessica Jones tells the story of its titular character as she retires from her career as a superhero, deciding instead to set up shop as a private investigator in New York City.

Dave Buckley, President of Marvel Television, Publishing and Brand Management explains: “we’re thrilled to be shooting these series in New York… we wouldn’t be here without the leadership of Governor Cuomo and his continuing commitment to creating a film-friendly environment in this state.”

Senator Chris Dodd, Chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America adds: “Marvel’s Daredevil and Jessica Jones are perfect examples of the content community’s commitment to embracing innovative distribution platforms… the unbreakable link between content and technology, coupled with competitive tax incentive programs, is a driving force behind productions that contribute enormously to the local communities in which they film.”

The state of New York currently offers a total of three tax credit programmes for filming alongside a list of production expenses that are exempt from tax entirely. These competitive incentives offer up to 30% tax credits for film production, 35% on post-production work, and 5% for commercials with an annual growth credit of 20%.

Daredevil and Jessica Jones aren’t the only Netflix exclusive shows to have filmed in New York, as Tina Fey’s original comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was shot on location in Rockefeller Plaza and the Upper East Side.
