Coca-Cola’s latest commercial doubles London locations for Nigeria
The latest commercial for Coca-Cola features a seamless transition between locations in Nigeria and London, in a spot that features Nigeria’s national football team. For the London portion of the shoot, production service company MADAM Films was given a lead time of just 10 days to complete a working schedule.
The MADAM team settled on using Barnet Football Club (The Hive) as their main location double, in a shoot that lasted three days and coincided with a scheduled football match between Nigeria and Serbia.
Detailing the process, MADAM’s Pippa Bhatt explains: “we needed to find a location that could slot into a Nigerian commercial that was mainly filmed in Nigeria. They had to shoot here as the main Nigerian players were in the UK and could not travel to Nigeria. Added to that, the team were here to play a friendly pre-world cup game so we had to keep the location near to The Hive, where the friendly was taking place, and to their hotel - not easy. We ended up making the Hive work for us after a lot of back and forth with the grounds and also exhausting all nearby football pitches.”
Directed by Cindy Lee, the commercial is a collaboration between Ogilvy & Mather Ghana and production company, The Star Film Co.
Carly Stone, MADAM’s Executive Producer adds: “filming with major footballers has become a MADAM niche. We had not worked with an entire squad before and it was a great experience being so involved with the Super Eagles during their UK visit. It was a fast moving and changeable project in every aspect. The production team were active and alert to bring the best production value and solutions to capture all the required assets during the team’s busy match and training days”.
While there are no dedicated financial incentives for commercial productions, the UK’s film-friendly infrastructure still makes it a prime location for commercial content. MADAM’s previous work includes spots for Hoehn Motors and Pepsi.
