British based productions get recognition at the 76th Golden Globes
The UK were strongly represented at this year’s Golden Globe Awards, which are often taken as early indicators of the upcoming Academy Award winners. Not only were British stars Olivia Coleman and Richard Madden in receipt of globes, but UK based productions were placed firmly in the spotlight.
Bohemian Rhapsody, the crowd-pleasing Queen tribute which filmed all around London took home two of the night’s biggest awards. To some surprise, the film won Best Motion Picture and Protagonist Remi Malek was awarded Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury. One of the biggest and most memorable scenes, the bands performance at Live Aid was filmed at Bovingdon Airfields outside of London where a replica set of Wembley Stadium was filled with hundreds of extras. The capital also doubled for international locations the band went on tour. Union Street in Southwark, for example, doubled for New York and Redcross Way in Southwark was turned into Amsterdam.
Another British success on the night saw Olivia Coleman presented with Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her role as Queen Anne in The Favourite. The historical comedy set in the eighteenth century filmed extensively at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire and Hampton Court Palace in Southwest London. The exquisite interiors and imposing edifices of these stately homes gave the film its grand historical texture.
The BBC and BBC America dramas The Bodyguard, An English Scandal, and Killing Eve were all up for multiple awards. Piers Wenger, Controller, BBC Drama says “It’s utterly thrilling to see great British acting talent being recognised in this year’s Golden Globe wins. It’s a fitting testament to the extraordinary quality of drama being produced in Britain that it is being rewarded on the world stage”.
Richard Madden took home Best performance by an Actor in a TV Series for his role in The Bodyguard, which filmed extensively around London for six months in between October 2017 and March 2018. Ben Wishaw was recognised for A Very English Scandal which filmed all over the UK including outside Westminster Palace, at Manchester Town Hall as well as doubling a town in Wales for Dublin, Ireland. Killing Eve, produced by London based Sid Gentle Films for BBC America shot in London, as well as France, Italy and Romania.
Other big winners on the night include Green Book starring Mahershala Ali as celebrated pianist Dr. Don Shirley as he undertakes a tour of America’s deep south in the 1960s. The film, which took home three awards doubled Lousiana and the surrounding areas for Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, North and South Carolina as well as the Deep American South.
