1917 eclipses the competition at 2020 BAFTA Film Awards
1917 dominated the 2020 BAFTA Film Awards, sweeping seven of the categories. Joker entered the night with the most nominations which translated into three wins on the night. Awards season favourites including Parasite, Little Women, Jojo Rabbit and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood all found success but, despite being nominated in ten categories, The Irishman went home empty handed.
1917 (pictured) dominated the night, taking home seven of the nine awards it was nominated for. Kicking off the ceremony by winning outstanding British film, the war epic went on to nab best film and best director for Sam Mendes, as well as four craft categories; cinematography, production design, sound and special visual effects.
Joker went into the night with the most nominations, eleven in total. Joaqin Phoenix take home best actor and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir was recognised in the best score category. This is the first year that BAFTA have introduced an award for best casting, with Shayna Markowitz winning the inaugural award for her work on Joker.
In the acting categories, Renee Zellweger's performance as Judy Garland in Judy (pictured) earned her the best actress accolade. Brad Pitt who plays Leonardo di Caprio's an aging stunt double in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Laura Dern for her role as a powerful divorce lawyer in Marriage Story won in the supporting actor categories. The publicly voted EE rising star award, whose previous recipients include John Boyega (Star Wars) and Tom Hardy (Inception) went to Michael Ward whose recent roles include Top Boy and Blue Story.
The remaining craft categories went to Ford v Ferrari for editing, Little Women in Costume Design and Bombshell for makeup & hair.
Parasite from South Korea’s Boon Jong Ho took home the award for original screenplay as well as film not in the English Language.
Sergio Pablos of Madrid based SPA Studios Klaus (pictured) for Netflix’s first animated feature film up against box office hits Frozen II and Toy Story 4.
For Sama, which was nominated in four categories including Best British Film and outstanding debut took home the award for documentary. The feature documentary sees Syrian filmmaker Waad al-Kateab film her life in rebel-held Aleppo.
Independent film Bait based on the story of a small Cornish village coping with an influx of tourists from writer/director Mark Jenkin, and producers Kate Byers, Linn Waite won the outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer.
