Global locations star for Dune, The Power of the Dog and many more at BAFTAs 2022
Dune and The Power of the Dog were among the top performing films at the 2022 EE British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards. An array of global filming destinations were showcased at the event as Denis Villeneuve’s Dune picked up five awards and Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog won Best Film and Best Director. Dune was filmed across four key locations: the Wadi Rum in Jordan, the Liwa desert outside Abu Dhabi, the northwest coast of Norway, and the soundstages of Origo Studio in Hungary’s Budapest. Set in 1920s Montana, American-Western drama The Power of the Dog was shot across New Zealand in the capital city Auckland, the Maniototo Plain of Central Otago, and the coastal regions of Dunedin and Oamaru.
"Jane - we are all standing on your shoulders tonight. You are a visionary who has trail-blazed through the last 30 years of cinema with stories about the silenced, the underrepresented and the misunderstood," announced producer Tanya Seghatchian as she accepted the Best Film award on behalf of The Power of the Dog’s absent director. "You've inspired legions of women to find their voices. We're here because of you.”
While The Power of the Dog won the coveted Best Film prize and Dune earned five awards from 11 nominations, this year’s ceremony was otherwise a relatively open affair with a broad range of winners spread across different projects. Will Smith won Best Actor for his role as Richard Williams - the father of tennis aces Venus and Serena Williams - in King Richard. Joanna Scanlan won Best Actress for her performance in After Love, a low-budget British movie about a white Muslim convert uncovering secrets from her husband’s past. While King Richard was filmed in Los Angeles, After Love was shot across a variety of locations in England’s Kent region, including Kingsdown and the White Cliffs of Dover.
Ariana DeBose won Best Supporting actress for her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story. Troy Kotsur won Best Supporting Actor for his role in CODA, an English-language adaptation of the French film La Famille Bélier. While the majority of West Side Story was filmed in California’s West Hollywood rather than New York City, CODA was shot in France, Canada and the United States. Kotsur, who used sign language to accept the prize, offered his services to the producers of the famous 007 franchise, asking: “Have you considered a deaf James Bond?”
The award for Best Film Not In The English Language went to acclaimed Japanese drama Drive My Car, an exploration of a theatre director’s struggles to cope with bereavement. The project was filmed across different parts of Japan, including Hiroshima and Tokyo. Drive My Car’s director Ryusuke Hamaguchi quipped: “Well, that got rid of my jet lag…” as he accepted the award with the assistance of a translator.
