McCann London enlists Katy Perry for Just Eat spot
Food delivery service Just Eat Takeaway.com and creative agency McCann London have created a new advertisement with pop star Katy Perry. The musician performs her own rendition of Just Eat’s Did Somebody Say jingle, celebrating the excitement of ordering takeaway food. This spot needed to appeal to 10 new markets that had never previously encountered a Just Eat commercial (including Germany, Poland and the Netherlands). The campaign follows the merger of Just Eat and Takeaway.com.
“Ordering takeaway is a regular Saturday night for me,” says Perry, “so it was fun to channel that into a video that is a combination of the things that bring joy to my life: poppy bright colours, wild outfits, and food puns sung over a catchy tune.”
Music video veteran Dave Meyers – who has previously worked with Perry for her Firework and Swish Swish videos – was on director duty. The project’s music and lyrics were co-created by Perry and her musical director Kris Pooley alongside McCann London and the team responsible for the original Did Somebody Say version featuring rapper Snoop Dogg.
“While there’s no denying that everyone loved Snoop, it’s now time for a new global icon to take centre stage,” declares Just Eat Takeaway.com’s Global Brand VP Susan O’Brien. “Katy Perry brings unparalleled star power and her playful nature matches ours to a tee. The playful lyrics about the food she craves echoes the huge variety of delicious dishes available on Just Eat. It’s not just a Friday night treat, we’ve seen growth in demand for delivery across breakfast, lunch, mid-week and even late night too. So for those, like Katy, who fancy an Acai bowl for breakfast, a margarita with extra cheese on it, or even a sub when they’re back from the club, will find it on Just Eat.”
McCann London has been Just Eat’s creative agency partner since 2018, and their new project sits somewhere between a music video and an advertisement, fusing music, fashion and food. Perry’s fictional home – where her order will be delivered – is reimagined as a supersized dollhouse with elaborate costumes and playful puppets. Perry wore a hamburger costume to the 2019 Met Gala afterparty and is known for her fondness of eccentric fashion and tasty food.
“Coincidentally most of my records and eras have had food undertones to them, from strawberries, to peppermints to now mushrooms,” adds Perry. “Working with Just Eat Takeaway.com was a really fun and natural experience.” The new spot is available to watch online now.
