BBC Scotland and Screen Scotland launch initiative for emerging TV directors
BBC Scotland and Screen Scotland are searching for the next generation of unscripted television directors. The initiative will give eight candidates the opportunity to produce and direct their first documentary with BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer. ‘Masterclasses’ will be offered by industry experts and practitioners throughout the project, nurturing the directorial voices of Scotland’s incoming filmmaking talent. Applications are now open, and closing date is scheduled for 12 July 2022.
“BBC Scotland has a strong track record in supporting and developing talent be that in front or behind the scenes,” says Tony Nellany, BBC Scotland Channel Manager and Commissioning Executive. “The central focus of this initiative is to support Scotland’s independent production community by attracting and supporting the best emerging non-scripted directing talent based here in Scotland.”
“It’s extremely exciting to be pioneering this initiative with BBC Scotland,” details Dani Carlaw, Head of Unscripted at Screen Scotland. “It offers a real opportunity for emerging talent from all walks of life to work on dynamic commissionable ideas from Scotland’s indies.”
Each successful applicant will be based at leading production company in Scotland for duration of their project. These production companies will oversee the development, filming and post-production of the film, and in turn provide training, guidance and support. BBC Scotland will also be on hand, supporting the development and production of these documentaries.
“From suppliers we are looking for ideas that will connect with 16-34 year olds on both linear and digital services in ways that feel both authentic and distinctive,” adds Nellany. “Once we have commissioned the films, we will match the eight successful candidates with the production companies and support them as they bring the ideas to life.”
