South Korea maintains its stamp on Netflix with new Little Women premiere
On Tuesday 30 August 2022, Netflix announced the release of new South Korean mystery drama Little Women. With the reveal of their climactic trailer, the series promises episodes filled with unending drama and unexpected twists. The new show, directed by Vincenzo's Kim Hee won will make its streaming screen debut on 3 September 2022.
South Korea’s quick turnover of projects for the streaming platform, and beyond, is a result of the global recognition of the talents making their way out of the region. After the Oscar-Award winning success of Parasite and the phenomenon that is Squid Games, the South Korean visual industry has expanded into all genres within the field, exemplifying a multidimensionality to the kind of content that is being created.
Little Women follows the whirlwind story of three sisters who experience the fast paced change from extreme poverty to immense wealth by pure circumstance. The Handmaiden and Decision to Leave writer Chung Seo Kyung brings the essence of Louisa May Alcott’s characters from the identically named novel to the personalities of the three actresses.
Director Kim stated; “The three actors have such a warm chemistry with their kind personalities and professional attitudes. They are supportive of one other, which makes them a perfect ensemble.”
The quintessential older sister is played by Kim Go Eun for the exhausted character of Oh Injoo. Kim, known for her contribution to romance dramas like Guardian: The Lonely and Great God and The King: Eternal Monarch, brings a new approach to portraying the scheming big sister. Nam Ji-Hyun brings her acting expend to her portrayal of middle sister Oh Inkyung. Nam has experience working on 100 days My Prince, however, in her upcoming role, she takes on a more stoic person as she plays the inquisitive reporter who strives to measure above her older sister. The youngest sister Oh Inhye is played by All of Us are Dead actress Park Ji Hu. Te sensitive artistic soul relies on her older sisters for protection, involuntarily thrust into the chaos of the turn of events.
