Emmy Awards 2022 winners make history
On 13 September 2022, the Emmy Awards held their 74th annual celebration. Honouring the most influential programmes and talents of the television industry, tis year’s show made history with their list of winners including Euphoria’s Zendaya and Squid Games’ Lee Jung-jae.
Hosted by former SNL performer and 90’s Nickelodeon star Kenan Thompson, the 2022 installation of the Emmy Awards returned in person for the first time since 2019. The show consisted of the usual comical flare that is expected from star studded events such as these, as well as heartwarming and tear jerking speeches form long time performers within the industry.
Sheryl Lee Ralphs Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy win marks the first for the Abbot Elementary actress and only the second for a black woman in the history of the event. Known for her roles in the 1980’s Dreamgirls Broadway production and Moesha, Ralph’s win brings the recognition of a 45 year career.
Abbott Elementary did not stop there, with the show garnering the award for Writing in a Comedy Series. Show writer and winner Quinta Brunson donated a portion of the marketing budget of her show to underfunded teachers, bringing the familiarity of her fictional world to a cause in reality.
Marking another historical moment, Euphoria lead star Zendaya became the first black woman to win in the Best Actress in a Drama category for her role as Rue. The celebration of the dark and gritty HBO production from creator Sam Levinson also sets Zendaya as the youngest two-time acting winner for the show.
The Netflix phenomenon that entertained isolated audiences, Squid Games, contributed to the momentous nature of the ceremony, with Lee Jung-jae becoming the first Asian actor to win Lead Actor in a Drama Series. The show also won for Directing in a Drama Series, taken home by Hwang Dong-hyuk.
Ted Lasso took home two awards during the night, for Best Comedy Series and Best Directing for a Comedy Series. This is the second year in row that the Apple TV original series has won the Best Comedy Series Award.
