Arctic Monkeys bring vintage visuals to newest music video
Sheffield born band Arctic Monkeys take viewers back in time with grainy, vintage aesthetics in their new music video for Body Paint. Directed by RadicalMedia’s Brook Linder, the eclectic images deliver a sense of nostalgia along with a new wave energy.
Alongside the classic instrumentals blanketing lead singer Alex Turner’s vocals, the music video is the ultimate tie in for the intended vibe. As the graininess of miscellaneous footage is accompanied by spontaneous flashes of film reels and spotlights swallowed up by dark backgrounds, Linder creates a symbolic homage to traditional processes of visual creation and the sentiment that derives from that.
“We really did ramp up a full film production to distil this song into a video, and that involves a lot of moving parts,” stated Linder in an interview with Little Black Book. “RadicalMedia knew this was a massive undertaking and they pulled it off.”
Filmed between London and Missouri, DOP Frank Mobilio captures the cross-continental flavour of a time of the past, creating a common ground with familiar imagery and appealing to the viewers shared perceptions of a particular generation. With the inspiration of 70’s filmmaking, the visual team of Linder, Mobilio, creative director Ben Chappell and Turner himself, the simplistic and succinct use of imagery, often juxtaposing each other, yet emphasising the impact of symbolism as the come across as complementary in aesthetics.
