The Crown returns for season 5

Netflix’s royal drama The Crown returns to streaming screens 9 November. Featuring the 1990’s era of the relationship between Dominick West’s Charles and Elizabeth Debicki’s Diana, the series will return to its quintessentially UK country sides and some new territories as well.

Taking to the throne, Imelda Staunton will play the role of the Queen for the fifth instalment of the controversial yet globally loved series. Often set amongst the lavishly decorated halls of Buckingham Palace, filming took place at Lancaster House to replicate the style of the famous home of the Queen.

Another familiar residence is that of Balmoral, which was featured in the last season as Charles, then played by Josh O’Connor, was courting Emma Corrin’s Diana Spencer. Standing in for the Scottish castle is another. Ardverikie Castle is located in the Scottish Highlands, delivering the same gloomy hallways and stately structure of the filmed setting of Balmoral.

Branching outside of the UK, paparazzi shots captured Debicki and West with the actors portraying a young Prince William and Prince Harry, riding on a speedboat in San Telmo Mallorca. Found on the North West coast of the country, the backdrops juxtapose the typical scenes of The Crown, opting for picturesque cliff sides and dazzling blue waters.

As the relationship between Charles and Diana begins to unfold in season 5, Brocket Hall will offer its 1760’s built estate for the imagining of Kensington Palace. Located in Hertfordshire, the home was once inhabited by two British Prime Ministers and a favourite of Queen Victoria. With it’s prominent stature set on the lush green lands that surround it, the estate is not too far off from its filmed West London counterpart.
