Tim Burton’s Wednesday series is set amongst the gothic charm of Romanian architecture

The creepy, kooky, mysterious, spooky and ooky Adams family have returned to television with the newest series Wednesday. Released yesterday, the Netflix series follows the psychopathic daughter whose namesake is taken on by the title as she navigated her supernatural boarding school Nevermore Academy. Creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are joined by veteran fantasy horror filmmaker Tim Burton who serves as executive producer and director on some episodes.

Nevermore Academy is almost just as creepy as the steeples, dark windows and splintered wooden frames of the Adams Family’s original residence at 001 Cemetery Lane. Whilst the family home featured in the 1964 television series could be found in the less than gloomy 21 Chester Place in Los Angeles, the newer iteration has travelled across the seas to Eastern Europe with additional photography taking place at Long Cross Studios in England.

The exterior shots of the boarding school were filmed at Cantacuzino Castle in Busteni Romania, which is steeped in local history. Previously serving as the residence for the family of Prince Grigore Cantacuzino after its construction was finished in 1911, it became a hospital for the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 1948.

In addition to the architectural marvels which contributed to the essence of the show, the Bucharest based Buftea Studios offered its spaces for production. The film studios have previously supported productions including 2020 action thriller The Doorman starring Jean Reno, Ruby Rose, Aksel Hennie and Rupert Evans, as well as adventure sci-fi thriller Voyagers, released in 2021 and starring Colin Ferrel, Tye Sheridan, Lily-Rose Depp and Fionn Whitehead.

The series stars Jenny Ortega as Wednesday alongside Gwendoline Christie, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán and many others. Christina Ricci, who previously held the role of Wednesday, has also returned to the series and the world of the Adams family.
