Travelling to the traditional and captivating landscapes of Lisbon, NBC Universal shot 2 episodes of the first season of fantasy drama Vampire Academy in a number of locations across the city. Filming in 12 locations in just over 7 days, the production included backdrops such as Alfama, Carmo Convent and Queluz Place.

Created by Vampire Diaries alumni Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntyre, the two are no strangers to the supernatural world of the bloodthirsty. Vampire Academy follows the struggles of two friends who must contend with their differences in class and everything that comes with that, all the while dealing with high school dynamics and the expectation of them entering high vampire society.

With 3 camera units used to capture the riveting scenes of the show surrounded by the mythical allure of Portugal, the production was not short of landscapes to add to the fantasy of it all. From gothic castles to deep and dark forests, daunting cliffsides and eerie coast lines that look out into the expanse of the sea, Portugal is well equipped with location variety for filming.

As filming interest begins to grow in Lisbon, opportunities increase for local cast and crew looking to get involved in the productions that arrive. For Vampire Academy, a Portuguese crew of 198 crew members were used alongside 182 international crew members coming from Portugal, Spain, USA, UK and Germany. In addition, more than 1000 extras, including local citizens were involved.
