Return of the Super Bowl commercials

As millions flocked to watch this Sunday’s Super Bowl main event- Rihanna of course- audiences were rivetted with top notch performances and an American football game too. But besides the half time show excitement and the battle between two teams for the esteemed Vince Lombardi trophy, the Super Bowl has also been known for its conversation starting commercials and trailers that keep viewers on their engaged all the way through. From newlyweds Ben Affleck and J-Lo enjoying some Dunkin Doughnuts to the return of M&M spokescandies, this year’s commercials did not disappoint.

After a meme-worthy appearance at this year’s Grammy Awards, Ben Affleck traded in his dapper suit and tie look for a Dunkin Doughnuts apron and hat, surprising customers at their drive-thru. Taking on the high stress job of taking orders and serving with a smile, the commercial titled Drive-Thru set Affleck at the Medford, Massachusetts branch interacting with real customers, some who’s jaws dropped at the sight of the actor handing them their morning coffee, and others who were rather unbothered. With a thick Boston accent, Affleck shouts over loudspeaker, “How can it be this inexpensive and good?”. For a surprise at the end, Affleck’s wife Jennifer Lopez catches her husband in the act, disregarding the strangeness of his new part time job and asking for a glazed.

Lining up for a quick press conference after the Kansas City Chiefs took home their title, the colourfully coated M&M characters announced their return, stating they are back for good. The BBDO New York feature ends the speculation as to whether the candy personalities would return after being deemed as polarising. Actress and Saturday Night Live alum Maya Rudolph was bestowed the responsibility as chief of fun and spokesperson for the candy brand. Keeping it short and sweet, the characters were featured in the 15 second clip poking fun at the exaggerated accusations for their portrayal and honing in on the fact that they are simply talking sweets.

In a battle of the fandoms, DC and Marvel released trailers for their much anticipated new releases. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 followed up their first trailer which aired late last year, with a new perspective on what fans can look forward to in the lives of the Guardians. Heightened by the crescendos of Rainbow’s Since You’ve Been Gone, the familiar characters embark on their usual complex space adventures. Welcoming back Gamora, the team is all back together to tackle a reality altering tyrant to protect life as they know it.

In another universe, Barry Allen is also tampering with the thin fibres of time, but for more sentimental reasons in the newest The Flash trailer. In an effort to prevent the death of his mother, Allen flits through points in time to find the right moment to ensure his happy ending. Featuring Affleck as he reprised his role as Batman once again, the series of time jumping scenes brings back a blast from the past as Michael Keaton dons the midnight Black Cape and minimally disguising mask, and utters the ominous “I’m batman”.
