Peter and the Wolf reimagination coming to Max and Cartoon Network

An adaptation of classic tale Peter and the Wolf has been greenlit for Max and Cartoon Network. Transforming Sergei Prokofiev’s symphony, the project is an enchantingly visual display touching on themes of growing up, loss, courage, and one’s relationship with nature, Gavin Friday contributes his music and narration to the project which features artwork based on the original illustrations by Bono. Set to premiere later this year, Peter and the Wolf is directed by Elliot Dear and Stephen McNally and is produced by Adriana Piasek-Wanski.

“The messaging of vigilance, bravery, and resilience that were core to the original symphony are still echoed throughout our interpretation, but we spin a traditional fairy tale into a unique adaptation that also incorporates the topic of loss, redemption, and recovery,” said Gavin Friday and Bono. “It’s our hope that this ‘Peter & the Wolf’ becomes a balm for any child dealing with loss, alongside exposing and captivating them into the wonderful and musical world of Prokofiev.”

Originally developed in 2003 by Friday and Bon, the project is in support of the Irish Hospice Foundation, the national charity focussed on those facing death and bereavement. The production’s team have worked closely with the foundation, taking on their advice on how to best approach the sensitive topics with authenticity and thoughtfulness.

Combining traditional hand drawn 2D animation and a physical set built world, the project promises a fantastical visual scape that possesses a heart-warming humanity. An angsty adolescent, 12 year old Peter is navigating his emotions following the passing of his a parent and having to live with his grandfather.  After hearing of a loose wolf in the meadows, Peter takes it upon himself to explore, encountering creatures who help him during his search.

“The emotion and artistry that Gavin has created in this modern retelling of ‘Peter & the Wolf’ brings a sense of fearlessness and style this story has never seen before,” said Michael Ouweleen, president, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Discovery Family, and Boomerang. “We think this slightly punk rock version of the timeless classic fuses beautifully for every audience, and we are honored that Bono and Gavin have entrusted us as the home to share such a personal journey.
