Malta Film Commission launches new film festival
The Malta Film Commission has announced the launch of the Mediterrane Film Festival, celebrating innovation and creativity in the screen industry. The festival is set to take place in Malta’s capital, Valleta, from 25-30 June, as well as other locations across the country. Malta’s upcoming event comes on the tails of five international shoots which filmed in the region in the past four months.
“The size of our country never deterred us from dreaming big. The Mediterrane Film Festival will bring together the nine unique Mediterranean nations to celebrate – the power of togetherness; the power of creativity; the power of opportunity. Because alone we are small, but together we are better,” said Film Commissioner Johann Grech.
With its positioning in the Mediterranean Sea, Malta will showcase films form each of the Club Med of Med9 nations, and alliance of nine Mediterranean and Southern European Union State Members, including Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain. The reveal of the festival will take places at this year’s Cannes event, with screenings being made available to the public, and feature films set to run for other awards.
Minister for Tourism Clayton Bartolo added: “It is in this spirit of togetherness that we look forward to building a bright future for the Maltese film industry, hand in hand with our Mediterranean partners.”
Maltese and international filmmakers will be in attendance, as well as actors, crew members, studio executives, producers and representatives from industry organisations such as Mediterranean Film Commission offices, the British Film Commission and major Hollywood studio executives. Most recently Malta was home to Tim Roth and Aaron Eckhart project Classified, The Silent Hour which doubled Malta for it's Boston-set film for 95% of the movie, as well as five other international productions which has made use of the region’s quality infrastructure, competent local workforce and breadth of locations. Incentivising production in Malta is their 40% cash rebate which ties everything together.
