New Gran Turismo trailer brings video game action to reality

Sony Pictures have released their trailer for upcoming car racing movie Gran Turismo. Directed by Neill Blomkamp, the upcoming flick brings the Play Station game to the silver screen. Starring David Harbour, Djimon Hounsou and Orlando Bloom, Gran Turismo is set for release in UK cinemas 11 August 2023.

From FIFA to NBA2k, sports based video games have the power to make players truly think that they have what it takes to take on the real thing. This was certainly true for young Jann Mardenborough,  whose passion for the Gran Turismo game led to him becoming a professional racer. Archie Madekwe will take on the role of Mardenborough who is chosen to attend GT Academy. Whilst his father, played by Djimo Hounsou is less than enthusiastic about his son’s sky high dreams, trainer and father figure Jack Salter, played by David Harbour and optimistic PR agent Danny Moore, played by Orlando Bloom, spur the driven lead character on to an unbelievable future.

"This movie is made for the cinema," Orlando Bloom said in a sneak peak video released by Sony in January. "The audience is going to feel every jolt, every thrill of this racing at 200 miles-per-hour."

In true Blomkamp fashion, the recently released trailer hints at the film having a realistic, almost documentary- like feel that places the audience right in the centre of all the action. The car racing game is the most recent to be adapted from Sony’s roster. With the popularity of video game adaptations, this upcoming release leads the way for many to follow, including zombie survival game Days Gone, and fantasy epic for Prime Video, God of War.

Producers for the project include Doug Belgard of Bad Boys For Life, Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from The Last of Us, and Academy Award nominee Dana Brunetti who worked on The Social Network. Gran Turismo video game producer Kazunori Yamauchi will serve as executive producer alongside Jason Hall, Playstation head Hermen Hulst and Matthew Hirsch.
