Jharrel Jerome is larger than life for Prime Video’s I’m A Virgo
Filmmaker Boots Riley brings I’m A Virgo to Prime Video, starring Emmy-winning actor Jharrel Jerome. The colourful sock wearing creative stands as creator, writer and executive producer for the project adding the eclectic series to his roster of projects which includes Lakeith Stanfield starring Sorry to Bother You. Set for a 23 June release, the series will be available in more than 240 countires and territories.
The Oakland, California set story was filmed in New Orleans Louisiana, with executive producer Tze Chun geo tagging an Instagram posting marking the last day on set in May of last year. With the premiere taking place at March’s SXSW event, the dark-comedy series follows the life of Cootie, played by Jerome, a 13 foot tall young Black man who tries to acclimatise to normal life outside of the isolation he grew up in. Forming friendships and relationships along the way, Cootie also has the opportunity to meet his real life hero aptly named The Hero played by Walton Goggins.
Casting includes On My Block actor Brett Gray, Tony-nominated and Obie-winning actor Kara Young, Olivia Washington of Breaking, Dolemite Is My Name and The Upshaws actor Mike Epps and Carmen Ejogo from True Detective and Fantastic Beasts. The series is co-produced by Amazon Studios and Media Res Studios with Riley and Chun acting as co- showrunners.
Alongside the aforementioned two, Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer serve as executive producers for Media Res Studios, known for their work on Pachinko and The Morning Show, Jharrel Jerome and Rebecca Rivo. Art pop duo Tune-Yards will also contribute original music to the series.
