Marvel release new series Secret Invasion

In the complex multiversal storyline, Marvel released their latest series Secret Invasion for Disney Plus on Wednesday 21 June. The series sees the return of agent Nick Fury as he works to expose the plot conducted by a group of mischievous shape shifting aliens known as Skrulls. Filming started in London during September 2021, moving to other English regions and stateside areas until its finish in April 2022.

With a darker than usual undertone for a Marvel project, Samuel L. Jackson’s character Fury brings another dimension to his typical comedically stern persona amongst the tribe of superheroes. Much like preceding Marvel series such as Loki and Wandavision, Secret Invasion adds a more dramatic tone to the franchise with a thematic shift from the grandeur of the features. Described as a dark espionage spy thriller, the series calls into question trustworthiness and suggest that all is not as it seems at first sight.

Cobi Smulders, who plays character Maria Hill in the recently released series commented on the nature of the show at last year D23 expo stating:  "This is a darker show. We're going to get deeper into the characters. We're going to see them in new ways, and it's going to be an exciting thriller, and you're never going to know who people are. Are they a Skrull? Are they human? It's going to be a bit of a guessing game."

As agent Fury set off on his mission to uncover the plot of the Skrulls, his expeditions lead him to many location which were in fact filmed in English regions such as Leeds, West Yorkshire and Hertfordshire. In West Yorkshire, the city of Halifax with its grey concreted backdrops including the Dean Clough building served as a dub for Moscow where as New Skrullos city found its foundational location at an old factory in Welwyn Garden City. With the help of the Calderdale council, filming in Halifax also took place at Bull Green in the Halifax town centre, as well as The Piece Hall which features in episode one as Vossoyedineniye Square.

The new series is directed and executive produced by Ali Selim along with fellow executive producers Kevin Feige, Jonathan Schwartz, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Samuel L. Jackson, Kyle Bradstreet and Brian Tucker. Alongside returning characters played by Jackson, Smulders, Martin Freeman and Don Cheedle, casting also includes Ben Mendelsohn, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Charlayne Woodard, Killian Scott, Samuel Adewunmi, Dermot Mulroney, Christopher McDonald, Katie Finneran, with Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman.
