Advertorial: Madrid locations attract international productions

Madrid is a city to tell great stories, which is evident if one observes its diversity of locations, from historic neighbourhoods, commercial areas with skyscrapers and avant-garde architecture, to arid areas, high mountains, lakes and castles distributed around the region, all less than an hour from the city.

Last month, Madrid Film Office, the audio visual office of the Madrid City Council, together with Film Madrid, the filming promotion office of the Region of Madrid, promoted several fam trips in order to highlight these locations and the filming opportunities offered by Madrid, which is booming with local and international productions.

A group of American and British location managers and producers had the opportunity to visit some prime locations, like the large set of underground tunnels found in the city, used in series ¡García! (HBO) and Intergalactic (Sky One). The architectural appeal of the Railway Museum, as well as its collection of historic trains, have made it a common location since Doctor Zhivago (David Lean, 1965), with recent projects such as Patria (HBO) or Cable Girls (Netflix) shot there.

Fernán Núñez and Santoña Palace, which stand out for their wide rooms and rich decoration, have been recently used in The English (Hugo Blick for BBC and Amazon) and 30 Coins (Álex de la Iglesia for HBO). Filming in the subway of the city has also become easy, from the most contemporary stations to an old station that is no longer active but maintains its 1950s look, used to double for a Moscow station on In From the Cold (Netflix US). The region also has a 17km long road completely available for filming, where projects such as La Fortuna (Alejandro Amenábar for Movistar Plus+) have been shot.
