The many locations of Netflix series One Day

David Nicholl’s best-selling novel One Day returned to screens for its Netflix adaptation. Released on 8 February, the romantic drama stars This is Going to Hurt star Ambika Mod and The White Lotus actor Leo Woodhall. Multiple locations were used for filming the series including the UK, Greece, Paris and Italy.

Nicholl’s novel was originally adapted for screen in 2011, with the film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess as lead characters Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew. The Netflix adaptation, however, expands on the novel’s original narrative. Starting off the story of Emma and Dexter, audiences are meet the characters at university graduation party in Edinburgh, actually filmed in The Old College of the University of Edinburgh. The city plays a vital part in the early stages of the main characters’ journey, with the end of episode one seeing Dexter chase after Emma to get her phone number through the scenic alleyway off of the Grassmarket with views of Edinburgh castle.

London also played a significant part in the lives of the characters as it stood in as their home for the majority of their adult lives. Key locations used for filming included the classic London hotel The Savoy, Primrose Hill and Kings Cross station. On the outskirts of the city, a Hertfordshire house leant its palatial structure for the setting of Dexter’s girlfriend’s abode, with filming also taking place at Benington Lordship and Hatfield House.

Travelling outside of the UK, Dexter meets with his mother in episode 2 in Rome, reconvening on the Spanish Steps. Dexter and Emma are also seen vacationing on the Greek Island of Paros, particularly near the  harbour at Naousa and backdropped by the blue and white buildings of the traditional town of Parikia. As Emma starts her time in Paris for a research visit, we see the pair strolling along Rue Pierre Semard, and the iconic iron bridge Passerelle Emmanuelle Riva.

The series is executive produced by Nicholls from production company Drama Republic, alongside alongside Roanna Benn, Jude Liknaitzky, and Nicole Taylor, who also serves as the show’s lead writer. Other writers include Anna Jordan, Vinay Patel, and Bijan Sheibani. Nige Watson serves as series producer for One Day, with Molly Manners, Kate Hewitt, John Hardwick and Luke Snellin as directors for the episodes.
