Sony's Spider-Man adjacent franchises expand with 2024 releases

Whist the web slinging superhero has no confirmed date for his return to screen, the franchises comic book counterparts are taking over in the meantime. With Madame Web’s release at the beginning of the year, Kraven The Hunter set for a summer splash and Venom: The Last Dance bringing the third installation of the symbiote anti-hero’s story, the Sony spinoffs are taking to centre stage.

Ending the year’s slate of Sony’s Spider-Man related films is the much anticipated third instalment of Venom. The upcoming feature titled The Last Dance, will see Kelly Marcel, writer of the first two films, making her directorial debut and taking over from past director Andy Serkis. With principal photography starting in June 2023, the film took a step away from its usual New York city backdrop partially, switching the scenery for Cartegena Spain and the Calblanque Regional Park.  Whilst the upcoming Venom flick has not revealed any narrative details, Eddie and the symbiote monster Venom made an appearance in the famed end credits of Spider-Man: No Way Home, drawing a link to the multiversal world of Peter Parker.

Marking the fourth film in the Sony Spider-Man universe, Kraven the Hunter travelled to Iceland for the filming of the villain’s character exploration. Founding member of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s created Sinister Six. Originally teased in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the villain named Sergei Kravinoff is making his appearance, played by rumoured upcoming James Bond actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson. After months of delay following the US based strike action, the Richard Wenk written and J.C. Chandor directed feature will be release on 30 August 2024.

Filmed across Massachusetts and in Palenque National Park, Mexico, Madam Web started off the rollout this year, placing Dakota Johnson to the role of psychic Cassandra Web. Set in 2003 New York, Web’s connection to Spiderman comes about through her friendship with Ben Parker, Peter Parker’s uncle, and after a battle with villain Ezekiel Sims, played by Tahar Rahim, inadvertently saves the future superhero.
