This Friday 12 April, Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black will make its premiere. Capturing the short lived career of the jazz singer, the film stars Marisa Abela as Winehouse. Capturing key London based settings that contributed to the life of the singer, filming took place on location at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, outside Winehouse’s first flat in Camden Town and at Primrose Hill.

Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, Back to Black tells the story of jazz singer Amy Winehouse. The London born singer will be captured amongst some notable sites both to the city and Winehouse’s life such as the Flamin’ Eight Tattoo Studio in Camden, as well as her first flat in the borough, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz club in Soho, Primrose Hill, and many more. As much as the respective characters during the singer’s life play a crucial role in the unravelling narrative, so does the city in which she lived.
Touted as a never before seen look into the life of Winehouse, the film is captured from the singer’s perspective. Starting in 2002, when the singer was ascending from her club show fame, the biopic captures the rise and fall of the singer’s life. Starring alongside Abela is Jack O’Connell as Winehouse’s husband Blake Fielder-Civil, Eddie Marsan as her father Mitch, Juliet Cowan as her mother Janis and Lesley Manville as her grandmother Cynthia.
Back to Black marks the first biopic on Winehouse’s life. Following her untimely death at 27 from alcohol poisoning, many documentaries were made about her life, including 2015 Oscar winner Amy and 2021 BBC TV Film Reclaiming Amy. Nicky Kentish Barnes, Ron Halpern and Joe Naftalin serve as executive producers for Studiocanal with Alison Owen and Debra Haward for Monumental Pictures, with the screenplay written by Matt Greenhalgh. The film is set for release on 12 April , supported by the Amy Winehouse Estate, Universal Music Group and Sony Music Publishing.
