French filmmaker Judith Godrèche to premiere new short film in Cannes

The Festival de Cannes will present French actress, director, screenwriter and producer Judith Godrèche's new short film Moi aussi highlighting  the stories of victims of sexual violence. The premiere comes as a show of support of the personal accounts depicted in the project which include experiences of Godrèche's  and other individuals.

“Suddenly, before me was a crowd of victims, a reality that also represented France, so many stories from all social backgrounds and generations,” Judith Godrèche confided. “Then the question was, what I was going to do with them? What do you do when you’re overwhelmed by what you hear, by the sheer volume of testimonies?”

Moi aussi (Me Too) is a powerful film bringing the necessary attention back to the sad universal nature of sexual violence. The film takes its name from the hashtag that was first coined in 2006 by activist  Tarana Burke to promote empathy among women of colour who had been sexually abused, and which was later on used in response to the sexual harassment and abuse in the workplace in 2017 in response to news reports of sexual abuse by American film producer Harvey Weinstein. The film takes on the form of a choral work made up of personal stories from one thousand participants told in fragments.

Since starting her film career in 1981 with Nadine Trintignant’s L’Été prochain (Next Summer), César award-winning Godrèche has starred in fifty films as well as on television and in plays. Past collaborators include Sophie Fillières, Cédric Klapisch, Park Chan-wook, Olivier Assayas, Jerzy Skolimowski, François Ozon and Tonie Marshall Taking on a new role, she would go on to direct her first film Toutes les filles pleurent (All Girls Cry). Moi aussi is directed by Godrèche and produced by Didar Dommeri of Maneki Films.
