Get ready for straight 8 shootout 2024

Short filmmaking competition straight 8 shootout returns to the Croisette for the screening of the daring entrants. Presented in partnership with the APA and Cinelab Film+Digital with support from SHOTS, Warner Chappell Production Music and MACHINESHOP, the projects will undergo a live vote in Cannes with a trophy ceremony to round of the events.

One cartridge of super 8mm film and 2.5 minutes. It sounds fairly simple. But with every shot taken in story order with no opportunity for retakes or editing, it up to the opening night to reveal the movie magic or mess. With no sound recorded through the Super 8, soundtracks are made blind and must be original, plus all visual effects, colouring and titling have to be made as part of the shoot. Entrants then send their exposed but un-developed film cartridges to straight 8 partners Cinelab Film & Digital who will process and scan the films. straight 8 will then line up each soundtrack with the first frame of the film.

This year’s lineup includes AFFECT SOUND, AGILE STUDIO, HUMANT LIFE, KAUS, IMAGINE THIS, IRIS, MAD COW FILMS, MR+POSITIVE, NOT JUST ANY, ODELAY FILMS, OUTSIDER, PRESENCE, RSA, SQUIRE STUDIO,THE&PARTNERSHIP and VCCP. The main event will take place at the Cinema Les Arcades in Cannes on 21 June with a screening in London for a re-run at The Prince Charles Cinema, Leicester Square on 27 June.
