Beetlejuice returns for spooky sequel
36 years later, Beetlejuice is making his much anticipated return. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice sees Michael Keaton step back into the shoes of the infamous character alongside familiar faces Winona Ryder and Catherin O’Hara. Directed by Tim Burton, the upcoming film shot across Vermont, Massachusetts, and England. The sequel premiered this week at the Venice Film Festival to an over four minute standing ovation and will release in UK cinemas on 6 September.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice follows the story of Lydia Deetz and her daughter Astrid, played by Jenna Ortega, who’s belief in the undead can only reassured by saying a certain name three times. Like the original, filming took place in East Corinth, Vermont, standing in for the fictional town of Winter River. Other key locations from the original film include Miss Shannon’s School for Girls shot at East Corinth’s old Masonic lodge, redecorated to fit the Burton aesthetic of the film. Many of East Corinth’s shop fronts were also repurposed for filming. Due to the strikes of last year, filming relocated to Melrose Massachusetts for a portion of the production.
Over in England, filming took place in Hitchin, a town in Hertfordshire, at an abandoned boarding school, as well as West Wycombe Estate. The England based filming was integral for studio shooting, located at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden. For the first film, studio filming took place at Culver City Studios in California.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice stars Keaton, O’Hara Ryder, and Ortega, alongside Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci and Willem Dafoe.
