Advertorial: Madrid doubles for London in the new season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon

This summer, Madrid witnessed a zombie invasion that transformed the city. It was not the end of the world, but rather a spectacular transformation of some of its locations. Just steps away from the iconic Four Seasons Hotel, the city turned it into apocalyptic London for the beginning of the highly anticipated filming of the third season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.

In this new season of the acclaimed spin-off of one of the most successful TV series in modern history, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon joins forces with Spanish production company Ánima Stillking as part of the production team for this season, bringing their years of expertise into the project. Filming took place in Madrid as well as taking advantage of the locations available in regions of Spain, capturing the diverse landscapes the country has to offer. Once again, Madrid consolidates its position as a prime production and filming hub for large international productions, showcasing its capacity to host large-scale projects.

This is definitely not a first time occurrence for Madrid in the last few years according to Madrid Film Office, the media office of Madrid City Council. In 2019, due to the similarity between Spanish corralas and Mexican vecindades, Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) filmed some scenes in Madrid set in Mexico City for the film. AMC’s series Soulmates (2020) also used Madrid to double for New York, Mexico City and other North American cities.

Movistar’s miniseries Dime Quien Soy (2020) recreated Buenos Aires in Madrid, including its port, and combining outstanding location Matadero Madrid with CGI imagery. La fortuna (2021), directed by Spanish filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar, also used different locations of the city to double for spaces in Atlanta and Washington. The city has also recreated spaces from Moscow in the spy thriller series In from the cold (2022) and Paris in Money Heist’s spin off Berlín (2024), both streamed by Netflix. These are just some examples of a long list that shows the capacity of the city of Madrid, its locations and its industry, to host stories that happen all around the world.
